First Mow of the Season: How to Avoid Damaging Your Lawn

Written by Lush Lawn | Apr 1, 2026 6:20:24 PM

There is nothing quite like that first warm Saturday morning when the smell of fresh-cut grass fills the air. It’s the unofficial kickoff to spring! But before you pull the starter cord and head across the yard, it’s important to remember that your lawn is just waking up from a long winter nap.

The way you handle that very first mow sets the tone for how green and healthy your grass will be all summer long. To help you get off to a great start, here are three simple tips to keep your lawn happy.

Set the Height (Don't Give It a Buzzcut!)

It’s tempting to drop the mower deck low so you don’t have to mow as often, but "scalping" the lawn is one of the quickest ways to invite weeds and brown spots.

  • The Sweet Spot: Aim for a height of 2.5 to 3 inches.
  • Why it Matters: Taller grass shades the soil, which keeps the roots cool and prevents weed seeds from germinating. Plus, longer blades of grass mean deeper roots, making your lawn much more resilient during those hot July stretches.

Check Your Blade Sharpness

Think of mowing like getting a haircut. You want a clean, crisp snip—not a jagged tear.

  • The "Paper" Test: Take a look at the tips of your grass after you mow. If they look white or frayed (like the end of a weathered rope), your mower blade is dull.
  • The Risk: A dull blade "shatters" the grass instead of cutting it. This stresses the plant and leaves it open to diseases and pests. A quick sharpen at the start of the season makes a world of difference!

Master Your Technique

Even with a sharp mower, how you move across the yard matters.

  • The 1/3 Rule: Never cut off more than one-third of the grass blade at a single time. If the grass got really long while you were waiting for a sunny day, it’s better to mow it twice (a few days apart) than to chop it all off at once.
  • Switch It Up: Try not to mow in the exact same direction every single week. Changing your pattern prevents the soil from getting compacted and stops the grass from leaning in one direction.
  • Wait for Dry Skies: We know the spring rain makes the grass grow fast, but try to wait until the lawn is dry. Mowing wet grass leads to clumps and an uneven cut.

Spring Mowing Checklist

Item What to Do
Mower Deck Set to 3 inches for a lush look.
Blade Sharpen or replace if it’s been a few seasons.
Grass Condition Make sure it’s dry to the touch before starting.
Fuel Use fresh gas; old fuel can make the engine sputter.
